The Smart Code Logic is a feature that allows the system to automatically upgrade a dental procedure code based on the specifics of the treatment being charted. It can automatically interpret and update procedure codes based on various factors like:
- Service type
- Type
- Applicable to: Tooth / Mouth / Quad / Tooth or Quad
- Tooth set
- Area
- Surface
- Material
- Applicable on up to 3 teeth
| Tip: Remember, the logic will only function when all of these factors align with the alternative code. The Smart Code Logic ensures that the code accurately represents the treatment provided by your practice. |
Let's explore how to enable Smart Code Logic and also run you through an example to give a clear insight.
Enable Smart Code Logic
Let's delve deeper into what a Smart Code Logic is:
- Navigate to the System Menu > select Practice Settings > Codes > Procedure Code.
- Select +Add New Procedure Code on the top right to Add a new procedure code or select an existing code to Edit.
- On the Add New Procedure Code slide out, you will find the Apply Smart Code Logic option.
- Select Yes to enable it.
| Note: Make sure to enable the Apply Smart Code Logic setting when you are charting for more surfaces which will automatically upgrade the code during treatment planning. |
Here's an example for better understanding.
- Let's create a procedure code D00005 with the Apply Smart Code Logic set to Yes.
In the Additional Details:
- Set Type as Filling
- Tooth Set as All
- Min # of Surfaces as 1, &
- Max # of Surfaces as 1.
- Now, create another procedure code D00009 with the Apply Smart Code Logic set to Yes.
In the Additional Details:
- Set Type as Filling
- Tooth Set as All
- Min # of Surfaces as 1, &
- Max # of Surfaces as 3.
Here, when we try adding code D00005 (the First code) to a patient and when we attempt to add two surfaces instead of 1(the Maximum number of surfaces allowed for code D00005), the system automatically picks up the code D00009 (the Second code) according to their settings (the maximum number of surfaces is 3).
Let’s see how Smart Code Logic works when we try adding it to a patient's treatment plan.
When we try adding the code D0005 and applying three surfaces to it, as all of the above-mentioned factors coincide with the other code and the Smart Code Logic has been set to Yes, the system brings in the code D00009 to the patient.
Smart Code Logic automatically selects and aligns the correct code with the initial code, integrating it into the patient's treatment plan and minimizing manual errors.
